On the 2nd of January I went to look at a new site, which it is hoped that I will undertake some excavation in, the site is 1st century Roman. This site is well hidden, in the woods, west of Arundel, in Sussex; it contains enclosures with really good surviving banks and ditches.
The site was looked at back in the sixties, and some trenches were opened up, what is interesting is that the trenches are still visible and look as if they were opened only a short period ago, like as time warp. They were never back filled.
When you look around the site, you can start to imagine what life must have been like here some 2.000 years ago, who were the people that lived here , what were they doing here, and what crops and livestock did they have.
Some of these interesting aspects of the site will be revealed when we excavate,, and from pollen samples we will learn about the crops they grew.
But this is only a part of the story, it’s the people I am most interested in, who were they and where did they come from, this always interest me the most.
Over a period of time I will add to this story.
